Police to walk streets as part of 'Light Up the City'

SAGINAW, MI — Light Up the City is returning to Saginaw with a kick-off event from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at the Dow Event Center.
The idea began last year in Saginaw as an initiative between the Michigan State Police, Saginaw Police Department, Consumers Energy and neighborhood associations. United Way of Saginaw County was brought on board this year.
"It's amped up from last year," said Jon Beyerlein, Saginaw community police officer.
Refreshments will be available at the event. Live entertainment from the Witch Doctors, and community speakers will also be featured.
After the event, law enforcement and community members will begin a walk through Houghton-Jones neighborhood to show a positive presence in the neighborhood, Beyerlein said.
An energy-efficient light bulb provided by Consumers Energy will be distributed to participating residents at no cost. Residents will be encouraged to turn on their porch light in support of the initiative.
The visual message signifies the unity of law enforcement and the community by taking back control of neighborhoods, according to the event website.
